Grown-Up Christmas List

You have a list.  We all do.  Whether it is written down or firmly planted in the back of our mind, it’s there.  Perhaps on your ‘Christmas List’ is expanding your marketing efforts next year.  Bill, Steve, and Tom have lists too. As we grow deeper into the holiday season and inch closer to the New Year, I think it is a good time to look at the most important ingredient of any list.

In 2007 Bill Belichick had the New England Patriots in uncharted territory. No team in NFL history had won more games in a season. The Patriots were undefeated in the regular season and the playoffs.  Next on his list is the New York Giants in the Super Bowl.

Steve Kerr has five NBA Championships as a player and one as head coach of the Golden State Warriors – the first in franchise history. His 2015-16 team won more regular season games than any other team in the history of the league. His team did something the Lakers, Celtics, And Bulls never accomplished.  Next on his list is the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.

Every year Tom McTee is behind the eight-ball in purchasing gifts for Christmas. But this year was different.  He completed his list the week before Thanksgiving, and started the shopping extravaganza the next weekend. Items were checked off the list with unprecedented speed.  As for his list, all that stood between him and his goal was the same overconfidence that took down the hare in his race with the tortoise

Each of these professionals had a list that they were working on, and each of them came up short.  The 2007 Patriots lost to the Giants in the Super Bowl.  The Warriors lost to the Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.  It’s the Wednesday before Christmas and Tom’s list hasn’t budged in 10 days. All of their accomplishments up to that point no longer matter.  Why?

They didn’t finish.

That’s the most important part of any list - checking off everything. Making a list is good. Success is measured by whether or not you finish it.

It may be written down, or an unspoken hope, but the next item on your Christmas list is to reach more and more members of your target audience and transform them into loyal customers in 2017.  We want to help you check that off your list. At WMG We believe everything we do will help your business grow by harnessing the power of engaging your captive audience. Remember to finish the advertising cycle strong with a professionally produced on-hold advertising program that reinforces your brand with every call.

Now, I’d love to stay and chat with you about your list and your goals for the New Year, but I have a list of my own that needs immediate attention.

Merry Christmas!

Tom McTee, Super-Genius
